Tours-Golden Temple in Vellore

Vellore, situated 145 kilometer from Chennai is a semi rural bazaar town. The famous and
well preserved Vijayanagar Fort and its temple are located here. The famous river Palar and

Places of interest
Amirthi Zoo/Park: It is situated under the Javadu Hills of Tellai across Amirthi River, located
25 kilometers away from Vellore.
Vellore Fort:
It is also known as Vijayanagar Fort. The fortification of the fort consists of a main rampart
broken at irregular intervals by round towers and the walls constructed with hewn kangaroo
stones are of rectangular shape.
The narrow wall running round the fort can be reached by a flight of steps at the entrance of
the fort. The main walls are built so strong with stones cut and filled together without mortar.
Jalakandeswarar Temple
was built in the late Vijayanagar style. It has two prakaras, inner and outer. The entry is in the
southern side. On the south-west corner of the outer court yard is the Kalyanamantapam
which is considered as a gem of architecture of Late Vijayanagar style in embellishments and
the art motifs of its pillars, ceilings and plinth mouldings.
Mosque inside the fort:
At present it is not used for worship and the gates of the mosque are closed.
It is rectangular in shape. On the front side it is plastered with lime and bricks. The Hindu
architecture slowly yielded place to the flourishing Muslim architecture which is evident in
the form of innumerable mosques.
Government Museum:
This is a multi-purpose museum treasuring the ancient and present day curios relating to
anthropology, art and archaeology, botany and geography. The historical monuments of the
erstwhile composite North Arcot district are gracefully depicted in the gallery.
Sripuram Lakshmi Narayani "Golden Temple":
The temple is located on a sprawling 100 acres of land. The temple, covering 55,000 sq ft,
has intricate carvings and sculptures in gold. The lighting is arranged in such a way that the
temple glitters even during night. About 400 goldsmiths and coppersmiths, including
craftsmen from Tirumala - Tirupati Devasthanam, have completed the architectural marvel in
gold in six years. The approximate cost of the temple is Rs 600 crore.
About 1.5 tonnes of Gold has been used in the construction of the Temple. The deity of
Mahalakshmi is made of stone granite, but covered with gold adornments. It is bigger than
the Golden temple in Amritsar. If you are lucky you can have the darshan of Sri Narayani
Amma the inspiration and the founder of the temple, and get his blessings.
Evening: Stop sightseeing at 6.30 pm, and arrive in Chennai around 10 pm.

Given below is a description of the place and the activities one can enjoy at Adventure Zone.
The Adventure campsite is roughly a 45-minute drive from Mahabalipuram, towards Pondicherry. It is an attractive and fully
integrated outdoor training site located on 5 acres of landscaped area in the heart of the countryside. The shade and the
breeze keep it cool enough to run camps here the year round.
Adventure Zone, has introduced Chennai to a whole range of adrenaline sports – parasailing, rappelling, rock-climbing,
camping or scuba diving. Doing these activities, you get a taste of life on the thrill side.
The company is run by a former army commando instructor with specialised training and over 20 years experience in
adventure sports. He is a perfectionist and is dedicated to providing the best value for money. Adventure Zone adheres to

SAARANG 2009

Saarang is an annual feature at IIT Madras and this year, it is touted to exceed expectations as IIT Madras is also
celebrating its 25th year. About 50 events are going to invigorate fun loving participants – with literary events, The Great
Hunt (popular treasure hunt), Art and Craft Events, Media events covering ad-making, reporting and short film making, a
series of lectures titled Madras Chennai Express.
What is going to add a lot of glitter to Saarang this year is the Theatre Festival. Three good plays will be staged on three
